up in the air是一個常用的習慣用語，我們來給聽衆們介紹一下。Air是空氣，up in the air就是在空氣中，也就是懸在空中，意思就是：某件事還沒有確定。

通常我們會說，某個計劃還沒有確定 - the plan is still up in the air。要是有的人對某件事沒有辦法作出決定，你就可以說：their decision is still up in the air。

下面讓我們來聽一個例句。這是一個建築公司的老闆在說他們的一個項目爲什麼遲遲不能開工。

Now with the new regulations about building next to an airport, it looks like we might not be able to start on struction of the golf course until next year. The whole project is up in the air.

這位老闆說：因爲對在機場附近興建設施有了新的規定，因此我們在年底之前要開始修建高爾夫球場看來是不行了。這整個工程就因此懸而不定。

up in the air這個習慣用語倒是挺生動的。說某件事情在空氣裏，自然是懸而未決，也就是不確定的意思了。是啊， 這個習慣用語在18世紀中葉就開始流行了，只是當時的人說，in the air，而不是up in the air。那是從什麼時候開始說up in the air的呢？

那是到了20世紀人們纔開始用up in the air。

下面我們再來聽一個例句。這是一個人在說他對自己的未來一點都不清楚。

I wish I could tell you where I'll be in six months time, but I don't even know. I'm not sure if I will have the same job. I'm not even sure if my girlfriend will be able to stay in this country. Everything is so up in the air.

這個人說：我希望能告訴你六個月後我在哪裏，可是我自己也不知道。我不知道我是否會作這同樣的工作，我甚至都不知道我女朋友是否能留在這個國家。一切都無法確定。
