流行美語脫口說:我們姑且說...

Let's just say that... 我們姑且說......

當你說話想要含蓄一點的時候，你就可以用“我們姑且說…..”Let's just say that…來開頭，用比較委婉的方式表達自己的意思.

A：Did Terry get fired because he was a bad worker?
泰瑞被辭退，是因爲他是個壞員工嗎？
B：Let's just say that he wasn't the best employee in the company.
我們姑且說他不是公司裏最優秀的員工吧。

A：How was your blind date? Was she pretty? 你相親的結果如何。她漂亮嗎？
B：Well, let's just say that she's not Vindy Vrawford.
呃，我們姑且說她不是辛迪克勞馥吧。

A：John seems kind of dumb, don't you think? 約翰看起來有點笨，你不覺得嗎？
B：Well, let's just say he's no Albert Einstein. 呃，我們姑且說他不是愛因斯坦吧。

Sleep on it 考慮過後再做決定

Sleep on it 在字面上的意思是“趁睡覺的時候想一想”，也就是指“先不用作決定，等考慮過後在說”，通常當他人問了你一個問題，而又不逼你馬上作決定的時候，對方就會跟你說這一句話：

A：I just don't know whether I need such an expensive car.
我不確定是否需要一部這麼貴的車子。
B：That's ok. Sleep on it and give me a call tomorrow.
沒關係。你回去考慮一下，明天再打電話給我。

Sleep on it 另一種使用時機是，當別人問你的意見看法，而你一時無法回答，你就可以說I need to sleep on it. “我得再想一想。”

A：Do you think we should accept Dave's marketing proposal?
你覺得我們應該接受戴夫提的行銷計劃嗎？
B：I don't know. I need to sleep on it. 我不知道。我得回去想一想。

Turn sth around 讓......改頭換面

在美語中，若是你想要別人“轉身”，你可以說turn around，而當你turn something around，最原本的意思當然是“把….翻轉過來”，但是用來比喻事物的時候，就有了“將…..改頭換面”的意思，表示把以往不好的東西，變得更好：

A：Wow! Your company is really expanding! 哇！你的公司真的擴張了！
B：I know! Our new president has turned the company around! 我知道！我們的新總裁已經讓公司改頭換面！

Catch on 學會,領悟

Catch on 在日常生活的使用上，最常見的意思有兩種，一是指“學會，領悟”：
A：Mike is such a bright math student! 邁克的數學學的真棒！
B：You bet! He catches on so quickly! 沒錯！他學得很快！

Catch on 另外一個常見的意思是“風行，受歡迎”：
A：The rating for our show are still really low. 我們節目的收視率還是很低。
B：I know, but don't worry - it will take some time for it to catch on.
我知道，不過別擔心，想讓節目受歡迎要花一點時間。

Be done with... 完成......

Be done + with something / +v-ing 就是“完成了某件事”的意思。同樣的概念，你也可以說成 have done something 外，be done with後面接的若是人，則表示“和某某人到此結束”的意思。

A：I'm finally done reading the novel. 我終於把小說看完了。
B：Good for you. I never thought you would finish it.
真有你的。我還以爲你永遠也看不完。

A：I'm telling you that I am done with you. 我告訴你，我們之間到此爲止。
B：That's fine by me. I'm sick of you, too. 我無所謂。我看你也不爽。

What can I get for you? 要我拿(帶)什麼給你嗎?

當你在餐廳的時候，你就可能會常常聽到服務生說這句話，What can I get for you?這是用來問客人需要點些什麼菜，或是還需要哪些其他的服務。Get something for somebody 就是“替（某人）拿…….”的意思，當你要出去買東西的時候，你也可以說can I get anything for you? 來問問別人是不是需要你幫他帶些什麼東西回來。
A：What can I get for you?你需要些什麼嗎？
B：I'd like an order of blueberry pancakes, with a side order of hash browns.
我要點藍莓鬆餅，另外再加點薯餅。
A：I'm going to the store. Can I get anything for you?
我要去店裏買東西。要我幫你帶些什麼嗎？
B：No, I don't need anything. Thanks. 不了，我不用什麼。謝謝。

I'm not going to give it away. 我纔不會透露...

Give something away 主要有兩個意思，一個是“透露（答案、祕密）”：
A：Can you tell me what the answers on yesterday’s test were?
你能告訴我昨天考試的答案嗎？
B：Sorry! I can’t give the test answers away just yet.
抱歉！我現在還不能透露考試的答案。

另外一個意思是“贈送”：
A：What! You charge for water? 你們連水都要收錢？
B：I’m sorry, but it’s expensive. We can’t just give it away.
很抱歉，不過水是很貴的。我們不能免費供應。

You got me. 你問倒我了.

當別人問了你一個問題，而你卻不知道答案的時候，你就可以說 you got me:
A：When did the Tang Dynasty end? 唐朝是什麼時候結束的？
B：Umm….. you got me! 嗯……你問倒我了！
這句話在使用上的另一個時機是，當你做一些不想讓人知道的事，卻不巧被發現，這時你也可以說You got me.“你逮到我了。”
A：Didn't you say you were at home all day yesterday? 你不是說你昨天整天都在家嗎？
B：That's right. 對啊！
A：Liar! I saw you with your girlfriend at the mall!
騙子！我看到你跟你女朋友在購物中心裏！
B：Whoops! You got me! 糟糕！被你逮到了。

So ... after all 所以 ... 到頭來

這個句型可以用來表達某件事經過一番波折，但最後還是回到原來的狀況或決定。
A：It's final. We're going to Bali on our company trip. 定案了。我們公司旅遊決定去巴厘島。
B：Ah! So we are going to Indonesia after all. 啊！所以到頭來我們還是要去印尼！
A：My boss finally agreed to give me a raise. 我老闆終於同意給我加薪。
B：So you're not going to quit after all. 所以你就不辭職了！

Let's give a try. 我們來試一試

“give it a try” 就是放手去試試看的意思， 同樣的意思你可可以說成“Let's give it a shot”或是“Let's give it go”.
A：Do you think we can finish this project today? 你覺得我們今天能把計劃完成嗎？
B：I don’t know, but Let’s give it a try. 我不知道，不過我們試試看。

We have a lot to catch up on. 我們可以好好敘敘舊

“catch up”是“趕上”的意思，朋友久沒見面，所以“趕上”的，自然是交換彼此以往生活的點滴。若是你因故沒去上課，就得要“catch up on the classes you missed，把請假時的上課進度補回來”。
A：It's been almost a year since we've seen each other. 我們快一年沒見了。
B：You bet. We have a lot to catch up on. 沒錯。我們可以好好敘敘舊。
A：I haven't seen you in class for over a week. 我已經一個多星期沒看你來上課了。
B：Well, I've been sick. I have a ton of homework to catch up on.
我一直在生病。我還有一大堆功課要趕。

Be about to ... 差不多是...的時候了

Be about to 就是指“時候到了”，“就快要…..”的意思，後面接原形動詞，主語可是是人，也可以是事物。
A：The volcano is about to erupt! 火山快要爆發了！
B：Let's run for our lives. 我們逃命吧！
A：I'm almost to throw up. 我快吐出來了！
B：Quick! Run to the bathroom! 快！跑去廁所！

Remind sb of...讓(某人)想起了...
.
“remind”是“提醒”的意思，“remind sb. of…”就是指一個人看到、聽到了什麼，而讓他聯想到了其他的事情。
A：You look really familiar. 你看起來好面熟。
B：I don't think we've met before. 我不覺得我們認識。
A：You remind me of a friend I had back in high school. 你讓我想起我以前在高中的朋友。
