Everyone loves fresh flowers but for most of us, they're only an occasional presence in our lives, generally limited to birthdays and the occasional romantic gesture.

But new research has offered the best excuse to go buy a bunch for yourself right now -- apparently having fresh flowers in your house can help reduce stress.

A study conducted by the University of North Florida quizzed 170 women about their perceived stress over an eight-week period.

The women were given flowers, a scented candle, or nothing at all, ostensibly as a thank you gift. The women who received flowers reported a significantly lower level of stress by the end of the period.

In fact, the difference flowers made was so great that study author Dr. Erin Largo-Wight concluded flowers could revolutionize public health.

"Indoor nature contact, such as flowers, represents an innovative public health solution to stress and stress-related health issues," she wrote.
