She didn't win. She didn't even come close. But she did make it further than the 2006 giant slalom gold medalist.

Vanessa Mae, the Singaporean-born British classical-crossover vioLinist turned Thai skier named Vanessa Vanakorn, fulfilled her dream of competing in the Winter Olympics on Tuesday.

出生於新加坡的英國籍古典跨界小提琴手陳美(Vannessa Mae)搖身變成了代表泰國的滑雪運動員Vanessa Vanakorn，週二她實現了參加冬奧會比賽的夢想。

Mae, competing under her biological father's name Vanakorn, finished the first run in one minute 44.86 seconds, a lengthy 26.98 seconds behind race leader Tina Maze. Vanakorn's nearest competitor was Xia Lina of China, in 73rd place and 7.3 seconds ahead.

陳美參賽的姓氏Vanakorn來自她的生父。她在第一輪比賽中的成績爲1分44秒86，比領先的蒂娜・梅茲(Tina Maze)落後了26秒98。排名在陳美之前的是中國選手夏麗娜，她排名第73位，領先陳美7秒3。

But at least Vanakorn, ranked 2,313 in the Fédération International de Ski world rankings, made it over the finishing line. That's more than can be said for 16 other racers, including 2006 gold medal winner Julia Mancuso of the U.S.

Vanakorn raised her ski poles and grinned widely as she entered the finishing area.

Not bad for a 35-year-old who made her fortune in her teens as a classical-crossover violinist. She even performed at the opening ceremony of the 2002 Paralympic Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Sochi was the first time she'd competed in the Olympics. Typically, skiers have to be in the world's top 500 to qualify for the Games, but allowances are made if a country has no other representatives and the skier has the requisite amount of points from FIS races. Vanakorn got hers in giant slalom races last month in Slovenia.

索契是她首次參加奧運會比賽。通常只有世界排名前500位的滑雪運動員纔有資格參加冬奧會，但如果某個國家沒有其他代表，同時滑雪運動員在國際滑雪聯合會賽事上的得分符合要求，就也能獲准參賽。陳美上個月在斯洛文尼亞獲得了參加大回轉比賽的資格。

Conditions were challenging up in Rosa Khutor on Tuesday, with heavy cloud and snow up at the starting gate and driving rain down at the finish line. This wasn't the blue-skied alpine bliss that Vanakorn must have dreamt of, but at least she was there, at the Olympics.

週二羅莎庫塔的天氣情況極具挑戰性，起點處烏雲密佈，還下起了雪，終點線更是大雨傾盆。這肯定不是陳美夢想的那種以藍天爲背景、在阿爾卑斯山盡情馳騁的情景，但至少她來到了這裏、參加了奧運會。

Vanakorn was the last to race on the second run. Again she made it down the course, though not with the aplomb and grace of most other racers. She finished two seconds faster than her first run, in one minute 42.11 seconds.

陳美是第二回合最後一個比賽的選手。她再次滑上賽道，不過沒有大多數其他參賽者的鎮定與優雅。她的成績比第一回合快了兩秒，爲1分42秒11。

In total, she was 50.1 seconds behind the gold medal winner Tina Maze. But she completed the run, which this time seven others failed to do. That meant she finished last out of all of those who crossed the finish line, but a respectable 67 out of 90 racers overall. Encore!
