韓國國會通過彈劾朴槿惠動議

South Korean lawmakers on Friday voted decisively to impeach President Park Geun-hye following weeks of political scandal that gripped the nation and sparked massive anti-government demonstrations.

韓國國會議員在週五投票後決定彈劾總統朴槿惠(Park Geun-hye)。幾周來這樁政治醜聞抓住了全國的注意力，並引發了大規模反政府示威抗議。

Legislators in Seoul voted 234 to 56 to topple Ms Park, whose power now transfers immediately to the prime minister while the matter goes to the constitutional court for final ruling.

首爾的國會議員們以234票對56票贊成罷黜朴槿惠，其權力將立即移交韓國總理，此事將等待憲法法院最後裁決。

The result, received joyously by crowds of demonstrators outside the National Assembly, is likely to mark an inglorious end to the political career of Ms Park, the country’s first female president and the daughter of former strong leader Park Chung-hee.

It was greeted by opposition figures as landmark in the history of South Korean democracy and the beginning of a new period in the country’s politics.

“The move to impeach the President Park is the first step in the long march to recover constitutional order and restore our democracy,” said Kim Kwan-young, a lawmaker with the People’s party.

The vote follows nearly two months of mass peaceful protests – some swelling as large as 2m people – in central Seoul, demanding Ms Park resign over an alleged influence-peddling and corruption scheme.

Ms Park’s fate now rests with the constitutional court, which has 180 days to uphold or dismiss the impeachment motion. If it is passed by six of the court’s nine typically conservative judges, Ms Park will immediately lose her presidential immunity and may be charged by prosecutors.

An election would be held in 60 days with the winner assuming power immediately – a dramatically reduced transition period that has worried some observers.

Ms Park, meanwhile, faces the prospect of a criminal investigation. Ms Choi, her long-time aide, has already been indicted on a host of charges, including coercion and abuse of power, and is currently in detention.
