Scrape the Poison off the Bone
This is a story from Three Kingdoms. Guan Yu was hit by a poisonous arrow in the right arm while attacking Fancheng City. When his men took the arrowhead out， they found that the poison had already seeped into the bone， so they persuaded him to go to Jingzhou for treatment. Determined to take over Fancheng City， Guan refused to retreat. Seeing Guan's wound getting worse day by day， they sent out scouts to look for famous doctors. One day， a man named Hua Tuo came by boat to the camp especially to cure Guan Yu. Guan asked him about how he would heal the wound. Hua said： “I am afraid that you will be scared， so Isuggest that we set up a post with a loop to tie down your arm with rope. Then， when your eyes are covered， I will start the operation.” Guan laughingly said， “That's necessary.” Then he gave orders to hold a dinner for Hua Tuo. After drinking several glasses of wine， Guan started to play chess. At the same time， he reached out his right arm to Hua Tuo and said， “It is at your disposal. I have no fear.” Hua cut the skin and flesh open and scraped the bone with scalpel. Everyone present covered his eyes while Guan continued drinking and playing chess. In a moment， the blood filled a basin. When the poison was scraped off the bone， Guan stood up and smilingly said， “Now my arm can move freely just like before. Mr. Hua Tuo， you are a magic doctor!” Hua said， “Since I started medical practice， I have not seen anyone like you. You are a magic general.”
刮骨療毒
關羽攻打樊城時，被毒箭射中右臂。將士們取出箭頭一看，毒已滲入骨頭，勸關羽回荊州治療。關羽決心攻下樊城，不肯退。將士們見關羽箭傷逐漸加重，便派人四處打聽名醫。一天，有人從江上駕小舟來到寨前，自報姓華名佗，特來給關羽治傷。關羽問華佗怎樣治法?華佗說：“我怕你害怕，立一柱子，柱子上吊一環，把你的胳膊套入環中，用繩子捆緊，再蓋住你的眼睛，給你開刀治療。”關羽笑着說：“不用捆。”然後吩咐宴招待華佗。關羽喝了幾杯酒就與人下棋，同時把右臂伸給華佗，並說：“隨你治吧，我不害怕。”華佗切開肉皮，用刀刮骨。在場的人嚇得用手捂着眼。再看關羽，一邊喝酒，一邊下棋。過了一會，血流了一盆，骨上的毒刮完，關羽笑着站起來對衆將說：“我的胳膊伸彎自如，好像從前一樣。華佗先生，你真是神醫呀!”華佗說：“我行醫以來，從沒見像你這樣了不起的人，將軍乃神人也。”

Taking Chencang by Using a Clever Strategy
This is a story from the novel Three Kingdoms. Zhuge Liang led 300，000 Shu State troops in a march towards Chencang， the vital communication stronghold of the Wei State. It was his second expedition against the Wei State. Hao Zhao， the general guarding the city dug the trenches deep and built the fortress strong. He waited for the attack. Everyday， Zhuge Liang sent soldiers to challenge the Wei army in battle， but the Wei troops held fast to their position and refused to come out. One day， a scout came back to report that Hao Zhao was seriously ill. Zhuge Liang thought that the chance had come at last. He ordered Wei Yan and Jiang Wei to take 5，000troops and surround Chencang in three days. They were to attack the city when they saw a fire inside the city. After that， he gave Guan Xing and Zhang Bao secret instructions. As the health of the Wei State general Hao Zhao was deteriorating， suddenly it was reported to Hao Zhao that the troops from Shu State had arrived outside the city. Hao Zhao hurriedly ordered officers and soldiers to defend the city in their position. Unexpectedly， a fire broke out on each of the city's towers. There was chaos inside the city. Hao Zhaowas frightened to death. The troops of the Shu State smashed all enemy resistance and advanced into the city. Three days later when Wei Yan and Jiang Wei led their troops to the gate of the city， they heard somebody shouting from the top of the city wall， “You have come too late!” The two generals fixed their eyes upon the person. It was the Prime Minister of the Shu State， Zhuge Liang. The two generals got down from their horses hastily and saluted. Zhuge Liang said， “The reason that I asked you to attack the city in three days is to keep the doldiers calm. In fact， Ihad already sent Guan Xing and Zhang Bao to secretly leave the center area of Han the same night as I ordered you. By disguising myself， I hid among the soldiers and set out for Chencang by starlight. We gave the enemy a surprise attack. The fire was set on at my instruction and it threw the city into confusion. This is called “taking the enemy by surprise and striking when it is unprepared.”
計取陳倉
諸葛亮帶領三十萬大軍再度伐魏，直奔交通要塞陳倉而來。守將郝昭在這裏挖深溝築堡壘，以守待攻。諸葛亮每天派人叫陣，魏軍堅守不出。有一天，派出去的探子回來報告，說陳倉守將郝昭病重。諸葛亮覺得時機已到，馬上叫魏延、姜維三天之後帶五千人馬圍住陳倉，待見到城中起火，協同攻城。然後又喚關興、張苞附耳暗授機密。魏將郝照病勢嚴重，忽然接到報告，說蜀軍已到城下，急命將士上城把守。此時各城樓突然大火四起，城中頓時大亂。郝照當即嚇死。蜀兵勢如破竹，直入城中。三天後，魏延、姜維領兵來到陳倉城下，見城上有人大喊：“你二位來遲了!”二人定眼一看，不是別人，正是丞相諸葛亮。二人急忙下馬行禮。諸葛亮說：“我叫你二人三天後領兵攻城。是爲了穩住軍心，其實我已叫關興、張苞連夜暗出漢中，我化裝藏在軍中，星夜趕奔陳倉，讓敵人一點準備都沒有。那些城內放火的人是我早就安排好的。一着火，城內必然不戰自亂，這叫出其不意，攻其不備.”

Three Heroes Combating Lü Bu
Toward the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220)， state power fell into Dong Zhuo's hand， a very cruel and manipulating person. Yuan Shao， the leader of an opposition force， led a punitive expedition to Lüoyang， the capital. Dong Zhuo sent a very battlewise general named Hua Xiong to meet sent a very battlewise general named Hua Xiong to meet the expedition army. Hua killed several generals in run from Yuan Shao's side. Guan Yu volünteered to meet Hua Xiong， saying if he failed to kill him he would kill himself. At this， Cao Cao， in admiration， poured a cup of heated wine for Guan Yu for encouragement. But Guan said， “Keep the cup here until I come back.” When Guan Yu returned with Hua Xiong's head， the wine in the cup was still warm. Dong Zhuo was alarmed at the news that his brave general Hua Xiong had been killed.
He dispatched Lü Bu with 150，000 troops to guard the Hulao Pass outside the capital. Yuan Shao sent eight armies to attack. When the two sides met， no generals from Yuan Shao's side seemed able to withstand Lü Bu; several generals had been killed by him. Zhang Fei charged Lü Bu， but after fifty rounds of fierce combats he still did not succeed. At the sight of his sworn brother Zhang Fei unable to gain an upper hand， Guan Yu lifted his crescent-moon shaped sword to join the battle. After thirty more rounds， hteir elder sworn brother， Liu Bei unsheathed his sword and charged up too. The three brothers closed in. This proved too much for Lü Bu， who feigned a lance attack and while one of the three dodged， ran back to Hulao Pass for his dear life.
三英戰呂布
東漢末年，董卓把持朝政，兇狠專橫。各諸侯，舉袁紹爲盟主，帶各路兵馬殺向洛陽，討伐董賊。董卓派華雄迎戰，連殺數將。關羽立下軍令狀，願去斬華雄的首級。曹操佩服關羽，敬一杯熱酒，關羽說：“ 酒先放在這裏，我去戰罷再喝。”說完，拍馬出陣。當關羽提華雄人頭進帳時，那杯酒還微微燙手。董卓聽說華雄被殺，派呂布領十五萬兵駐守洛陽城外的虎牢關。袁紹派八路大軍前去攻打。虎牢關下呂布連殺數位將領。這時，張飛衝殺上去，連戰五十回合。關羽見張飛勝不了呂布，便舞動青龍偃月寶刀前去助戰。
三匹戰馬，丁字擺開，廝殺三十回合，仍勝不了呂布。劉備見狀掣寶劍，騎黃鬃馬斜刺過來，三個人把呂布圍在當中，走馬燈般的輪流廝殺，呂布畢竟難敵三人，漸漸覺得難以招架，便朝劉備虛晃一戟，拍馬衝出了包圍圈逃回虎牢關。

Guan Yu Floods Seven Armies
This is a story from Three Kingdoms. Cao Cao appointed Yu Jin as the chief commander in charge of the southern expedition， together with Pang De in the vanguard. They led seven armies to rescue Fancheng City. When Guan Yu of Shu learned this， he led his army to take them on. Guan and Pang fought over one hundred rounds with neither gaining an advantage. The fight continued on the second day without an exchange of words. After another 50rounds， Pang rode his horse to flee and Guan rode after him. Pang shot an arrow at Guan who was unable to dodge it. The wounded Guan went back to his camp for recuperation. Ten days later， Guan's wound got healed. Guan Yu learned from Guan Ping that Cao Cao's army had moved to the north of the city. Guan Yu went to a nearby hilltop to look at the terrain. He saw the enemy's troops in the northern mountain valley; also， he noticed that the Xiangjiang River was unusually swift. He hit on the idea of flooding the seven armies. He ordered his army to get boats and rainwear ready. He had his men dam up several points in the river so as to flood Cao Cao's army. Pang De talked with his generals of moving out of the valley onto higher ground the next day. That night， wind blew fiercely and rain came down heavily. Pang De， sitting in his tent， heard the restless movements of the horses and the sound of battle drums. Alarmed， he went outside to look. From all sides， floodwaters were rushing in; the seven armies， thrown into a panic， had already lost untold numbers in the tide. The water reached a depth of over three meters. With their soldiers， Yu Jin and Pang De climbed to higher ground. Guan Yu urged his forces to strike. Yu Jin and Pang De's armies， seeing no way out， surrendered. Pang De， who had gotten hold of a boat， tried to escape westward. The boat， however， was knocked down by Zhou Cang's raft and Pang De was captured alive.
水淹七軍
曹操命大將於禁爲南征將軍，龐德爲先鋒，統帥七路大軍，星夜去救樊城。關羽得信，親自披掛前去迎敵。關羽、龐德大戰百餘回合，不分勝負。第二日交戰，二將齊出，並不答話，拍馬交鋒五十回合，龐德撥馬逃走，關羽緊追不捨。龐德取箭，關羽躲閃不及中箭，回營養傷。十日後，箭傷癒合。又聽關平說曹兵移到城北駐紮。關羽不知何意，騎馬登高觀望，看到北山谷內人馬很多，又見襄江水勢洶猛，水淹七軍之計，油然而生。遂急命部下準備船筏，收拾雨具，又派人堵住各處水口。龐德與衆將商議，山谷不易久留，準備明日將軍士移入高地。就在這天夜裏，風雨大作，龐德在帳中，只聽萬馬奔騰，喊聲震天。出帳一看，大水從四面急劇涌來。七軍兵士隨波逐浪，淹死很多。于禁、龐德率將士登上小土山躲避，關羽帶大軍衝殺而來，于禁見四下無路，投降關羽。龐德和身無盔甲的殘兵敗將，被關羽的兵馬團團圍住，戰不多時，衆將全都投降。只有龐德奪一小船，想順流西去，卻被周倉的大筏撞到水中，後被生擒。

Mi Heng's Denouncement of Cao Cao
Mi Heng was recommended to Cao Cao when the latter， to expand his infLüence， needed someone to lobby Liu Biao. But Mi was slighted. Mi took his anger out on almost all of Cao Cao's subordinates. One day， at a banquet in honor of distinguished guests， Cao bid Mi to work as a drummer， just to insult him for fun. Mi came dressed in rag， and when asked why he simply stripped off what was on him to proudly stand nude before the public. Guests shut their eyes in embarrassment. To rebut the angry blame by Cao Cao. Mi said. “You said I'm shameless? Not me but someone who has misled his majesty. Let people vies my clean conscience.” “If you're clean，” Cao roared， “Who's dirty?” “You!” Mi sneered. “Your eyes are dirty for being unable to tell good men from bad， your mouth is dirty because you do not read， your ears are dirty because you refuse to listen to advice， you know nothing about history because of your dirty body， and you tolerate nobody because of the dirt in your belly.” Cao， infuriated， ordered him to the battle front， hoping the enemy's sword would kill him.
擊鼓罵曹
曹操爲了擴大自己的努力，想請人去劉表那裏遊說，孔融就推薦了他的好朋友禰衡。禰衡被請來後，曹操對他不以禮相待惹得禰衡當面罵遍了曹操手下的謀士和大將。第二天，曹操大宴賓客，讓禰衡擊鼓取樂。禰衡身穿破衣上堂，有人責問禰衡爲何不更衣，禰衡當場脫衣，光着身子站立，嚇的賓客以手捂眼，氣得曹操大罵禰衡無恥。禰衡反脣相譏說：“什麼叫無恥，欺君才叫無恥。我光着身子，是讓大家看看我的清白。”曹操怒指禰衡說：“ 你清白，誰骯髒?”禰衡冷笑道：“你就是一個骯髒的人。你不分好人壞人，是你的眼太髒;你書也不讀，是因爲你嘴太髒;你不聽人勸，是因爲你的耳朵太髒;你不董歷史，是因爲你的身體太髒;你容不得別人，是因爲你的肚子太髒。”曹操一氣之下，命他立即出征，借敵人的刀殺了禰衡。
