If So For Birds, Why Not For Man?
This is a true story. It was on a winter morning, near Oxford, Maryland, that a friend of mine set the breakfast table beside the huge window, which overlooked the Tred Avon River. Across the river, beyond the dock, the snow laced the rim of the shore in white. For a moment she stood quietly, looking at what the night's storm had painted.
鳥兒尚且如此，何況人呢?
這是一個真實的故事。故事發生在一個冬天的早晨。在靠近馬里蘭州牛津鎮的地方，我的一個朋友在一扇巨大的窗戶旁擺放早餐餐具。透過窗戶，可以俯視特愛溫河。碼頭之外，大雪將整條河流鑲上了白色的銀邊。她在窗前靜靜地站了好一會兒，凝視着昨夜暴風雪勾畫的這一傑作。
Suddenly she leaned forward and peered close to the frosted window. “It really is true,” she cried out loud. “There is a goose out there.” She saw a large Canadian goose, very still, its wings folded tight to its sides, its feet frozen to the ice.
突然，她向前傾了傾身子，貼近結了霜的窗戶向外仔細看去。“是真的!”她不禁失聲叫道，“那兒有一隻黑雁!”她看到了一隻碩大的加拿大黑雁，它一動不動，翅膀緊緊地收攏在身體兩側，雙腳已經被凍在了冰裏。
Then from the dark skies, she saw a line of swans. They moved in their own singular formation, graceful, intrepid, and free. Suddenly they floated from the top of the sky downward and at last surrounded the frozen goose. Seeing this, my friend feared what life it still had might be pecked out by those great swan bills.
這時，她看到一隊天鵝從昏暗的天空飛過來。它們以自己獨特的陣式飛行着，優雅，無畏而又自在。突然，它們從高空向下飛去，最後將那隻凍僵的黑雁團團圍住了。看到這種場景，我的朋友滿心恐懼，擔心那隻一息尚存的黑雁或許將在一羣天鵝的利喙下變得千瘡百孔。
Instead, amazingly, those bills began to work on the ice. At last, the goose was rimmed by a narrow margin of ice instead of the entire creek. The swans rose again, hovered in a circle, awaiting the results of their labors.
然而令人驚訝的是，那些利喙卻啄起冰塊來。最後，黑雁的身體周圍只是鑲嵌着窄窄的冰塊，而不再被整條冰河所困。天鵝們於是再次飛起，在天空中盤旋飛行，等待觀看它們的勞動成果。
The goose's head lifted. Its body pulled. Then the goose was free and standing on the ice. But it seemed not be able to fly. Later, four of the swans came down around it. Their powerful beaks scraped the goose's wings from top to bottom and rode up its body, chipping off the ice held in the feathers.
黑雁擡起頭來，用力伸展着身體，最後它終於掙脫了冰凍，站在了冰面上。但它似乎不能飛起來。隨後，只見四隻天鵝飛到它的身旁，用它們那強有力的喙上上下下地蹭它的翅膀，拱它的身體，啄掉它羽毛裏的冰塊。
The goose spread its wings as far as they would go. When at last the wings reached their fullest, the four swans took off and joined the hovering group. They resumed flying in perfect formation, to their secret destination.
Behind them, rising with incredible speed and joy, the goose moved into the sky. It followed them, flapping double time, until it caught up, until it joined the last end of the elegant line.
黑雁極力地伸展着雙翅。當翅膀最終完全展開後，四隻天鵝飛起，回到了自己的隊伍中。隨後，這隊天鵝又以完美的陣式繼續飛行，飛往它們那神祕的歸宿。
就在它們的身後，那隻黑雁以驚人的速度快活地飛入天空。它隨天鵝飛去，加倍抖動着雙翅，最終趕上了它們，加入了那一優美的線條，緊跟其後。
My friend was deeply moved with tears running down her cheeks. Even birds give a hand to those in trouble. I just often think of this story in the bad moments and tell myself, “If so for birds, why not for man?”
我的朋友被深深地打動了，淚流滿面。連鳥兒都知道危難時刻要互相幫助。在陷入困境時，我總會想起這個故事，總是提醒自己：“鳥兒尚且如此，何況人呢?”

飛翔
Once upon a time there was a little orphan boy who had always wished that he could fly like a bird. “Why can't I fly like a bird?” he thought.
從前有個小男孩，他是個孤兒，總是希望自己能像鳥兒一樣飛翔。“爲什麼我不能像鳥兒一樣飛翔呢?”他心想。
There was another little boy who was crippled. He had always wished that he could walk and run like other little boys and girls. “Why can't I be like them?” he wondered.
One day the little orphan boy met the little crippled boy in a park. He ran over to the little boy and asked him if he had ever wanted to fly like a bird.
還有一個小男孩，他是個跛子，總是希望自己能像其他的小男孩和小女孩一樣會走會跑。“爲什麼我就不能像他們那樣呢?”他很納悶。
一天，孤兒小男孩和跛子小男孩在一個公園裏偶然相遇。孤兒小男孩跑向跛子小男孩，問他是否希望像鳥兒一樣飛翔。
“No,” said the little crippled boy. “But I have wondered what it would be like to walk and run like other boys and girls.”
“不，”跛子小男孩說。“但我在想如果像其他的小男孩和小女孩一樣能走能跑會是什麼樣子。”
“That is very sad.” the little orphan boy said, “Do you think we could be friends?”
“Sure.”
“那太令人傷心了。”孤兒小男孩說，“你覺得我們會成爲朋友嗎?”
“當然可以。”
The two little boys played happily for hours. Then the little crippled boy's father came with a wheelchair to pick up his son. The little orphan boy ran over to the boy's father and whispered something into his ear.
兩個小男孩一起玩耍了幾個小時，他們是那麼開心。後來，跛子小男孩的父親推着輪椅來接他的兒子。孤兒小男孩跑向那位父親，湊近他的耳朵竊竊私語了一番。
“That would be OK.” said the man.
Then the little boy ran over to his new friend and said, “You are my only friend and I wish that there was something that I could do to make you walk and run like other little boys and girls. But I can't. But there is something that I can do for you.”
“行，好吧。”那位父親說。
接着，小男孩又跑向他的新朋友，說道：“你是我唯一的朋友，我真希望自己能做些什麼以便讓你像其他小男孩和小女孩一樣能走能跑，但我無能爲力。不過，我還是能爲你做些什麼的。
The little orphan boy turned around and told his new friend to slide up onto his back. He then began to run across the grass. Faster and faster he ran, carrying the little crippled boy on his back. Faster and harder he ran across the park. Harder and harder he made his legs travel. Soon the wind just whistled across the two little boys' faces.
孤兒小男孩轉過身去，要他的新朋友滑到自己的後背上。然後，他開始穿過草地跑起來。就這樣，孤兒小男孩揹着跛子小男孩，跑得越來越快，越來越猛，穿越整個公園，他的兩條腿簡直像飛起來一般。不一會兒，吹在兩個小男孩臉龐的風呼嘯起來。
The little boy's father began to cry as he watched his beautiful little crippled son flapping his arms up and down in the wind, all the while yelling at the top of his voice,“I'M FLYING, DADDY. I'M FLYING!”
只見跛子小男孩在風中上下舞動着手臂，樣子是那麼美，他一路高聲呼喊：“我在飛啊，爸爸。我在飛!”看着這一場景，小男孩的父親感動地流下了眼淚。
Friends always do their best to help us accomplish your dreams. The little orphan boy could do nothing to make the crippled boy walk or run, but he managed to make him “fly”. He failed to make his own dream of flying come true, but he took delight in helping his friend “fly”.
朋友總會盡他們最大的努力幫助我們實現夢想。孤兒小男孩對跛子小男孩能走能跑的願望束手無策，但他卻想方設法使他“飛起來”。他沒有實現自己飛翔的夢想，但他卻可以幫助朋友“飛翔”，並且引以爲樂。
英語美文分享賞析Salty Coffee
鹹味咖啡
A boy invited a girl to have coffee with him at a party. He was too nervous to say anything, and she felt uncomfortable.
一個聚會上，有個男孩邀請一個女孩跟他一起喝咖啡。他太緊張了，一句話也說不出來，這讓她感覺很不舒服。
Suddenly he asked the waiter: “Would you please give me some salt? I’d like to put it in my coffee.”
突然，他問服務員：“請給我一些鹽，好嗎?我想把它放進我的咖啡裏。”
She asked him curiously: “Why do you have this hobby?”
她很好奇，便問道：“你怎麼會有這樣一個愛好?”
He replied: “Every time I have the salty coffee, I always think of my childhood, think of my hometown, I miss my hometown so much, I miss my parents who are still living there.”
他回答說：“我每次喝鹹味咖啡時，總會想起我的童年，想起我的故鄉，我太思念故鄉了，那裏住着我的父母親，我非常想念他們。”
While saying that, tears filled his eyes. She was deeply touched. Then she also started to speak, spoke about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was a really nice talk, also a beautiful beginning of their story.
他說這些話時，不禁熱淚盈眶。女孩被深深地感動了。然後，她開始開口，講述她那遙遠的故鄉，她的童年和家庭。這真是一場美妙的談話，從此一個美麗的愛情故事開始了。
They continued to date. She found that actually he was a man who met all her demands; he had tolerance, was kind hearted, warm, careful. Then they got married and were living the happy , every time she made coffee for him, she put some salt in the coffee, as she knew that’s the way he liked it.
他們繼續約會。女孩發現，事實上，男孩符合她所有的要求，他寬容、善良、熱情、細心。然後，他們就結婚了，過着幸福的生活……她每次爲他煮咖啡，都要在咖啡裏放些鹽，因爲她知道他喜歡那樣。
After 40 years, he passed away, left her a letter which said: “My dearest, please forgive me, forgive my whole life lie. This was the only lie I said to you—the salty coffee.
四十年後，他離開了人世，給她留下了一封信。信上說：“我最親愛的，請原諒我，原諒我一生的謊言。這是我對你說的唯一的一個謊言——鹹味咖啡。
“I tried to tell you the truth many times in my life, but I was too afraid to do that, as I have promised not to lie to you for anything. Now I’m dying, I’m afraid of nothing so I tell you the truth: I don’t like the salty coffee, what a strange bad taste. But I have had the salty coffee for my whole life! Since I knew you, I never feel sorry for anything I do for you. Having you with me is my biggest happiness for my whole life. If I can live for a second time, I still want to know you and have you for my whole life, even though I have to drink the salty coffee again.”
“在我有生之年，有多少次我試圖將真相告訴你，但是我太擔心了，就沒那樣做，因爲我向你發過誓絕不對你撒謊。我現在奄奄一息，已經不再有什麼顧忌，所以我就把真相告訴你吧：我不喜歡鹹味咖啡，它的味道是那麼奇怪。但是我卻喝了一生的鹹味咖啡!自從結識你以來，我就從沒有對我爲你做過的事情遺憾過。有你在我身邊是我一生最大的幸福。假若我有第二次生命，我仍然想認識你，一生擁有你，即使我還要喝鹹味咖啡。”
Her tears made the letter totally wet.
她的眼淚浸透了信紙。
Some day, someone asked her: “What’s the taste of salty coffee?” “It’s sweet.” She replied.
有一天，有人問她：“放了鹽的咖啡什麼味道?”“甜甜的。”她回答。
The magic of love works in the loving pairs. Both parts are always ready to sacrifice for the other’s sake. Though probably such a sacrifice will cause bitterness to the contributing one, he or she feels sweet.
情侶之間有一種愛的魔力。兩人總會爲彼此做出犧牲。儘管這樣的犧牲會給付出的一方帶來一些痛苦，但他/她仍然感覺甜蜜。
