The Breeze of Passion

(To the Tune of Liuzhici)

Li Yu

No longer young against the breeze

of passion, now, she is shy

with the splendor of the spring, everywhere,

everywhere petals fall, reminding her

of the people who used to go out with her.

Thanks to the long willow shoot that bends

itself for her, she succumbs

to the mist-like tassel caressing

her face, as if touched

by an old campanion.

The Fair Maiden

Cao Zhi

Alluring and sky, stands a fair maiden,

Gathering mulberry leaves at the crossroads.

The tender twigs rustle;

The leaves fall one by one.

How white her hands as she bares her arms,

A gold bracelet round her wrist!

On her head a golden sparrow hairpin;

At her waist a green jade pendant,

While encompassing her lovely form,

Pearls, coral and blue glass beads.

In the breeze, her silk blouse flutters

And her light skirt flows.

Glances reveal her shining eyes;

Sighs her breath, orchid sweet.

Travellers en route halt their carriages;

Those resting forget their refreshment.

If someone asks where she lives,

Her home is in the south of the city.

A green, storied house by the highway,

With a high gate and double bars.

Radiant as the morning sun,

Who could not admire her beauty?

Why aren't the matchmakers busy?

Where are the silk and jade betrothal gifts?

This fair maiden longs for a worthy lover;

Yet how hard to find a fitting mate.

In vain people make suggestions,

Ignorant of her ideal.

Wasting her youth away in her home,

At midnight she awakes and sighs.

An Eulogium on a Humble Cell

Liu YuXi

A mount needs not be high; it becomes noted when on it fairies dwell.

A body of water needs not be deep; it would be ensouled, if a dragon makes it its restingwhereabouts.

This hut of mine is a humble one, but I make it virtuously fragrant in repute.

The green moss creeping on the stepping stones and the verdure in the courtyard peeingthrough the screen do tell the presence of spring.

Here could be heard the table-talks and laughters of renowned scholars, but the rough andgross come not hither their wares to sell.

Here plain table-heptachord could be plucked and golden classics read the worldly cares toquell.

But there are without riotous strings and pipes to confuse the ears, and tedious officialdocuments to ring quietude’s knell.

Zhuge’s recluse cottage at NanYang and Yang Xiong’s hermit arbour in West Shu, –accordingto Confucius, wherefore could either one of them be branded as a humble cell?
