In the night of October 18th, on the 3rd interstate of Argentina, the noise of ambulance and petrol cars intertwined with each other.

In the middle of the road, there was a broken pedicab which got destroyed in the accident.

The posters on the pedicab were already ragged. And that red banner with Chinese characters written on it had fell off.

Beside the pedicab lay an old man.

He had a typical Eastern-Asian face. His white hair and long white beard became a mess in the accident.

The toplights of the near vehicles cast lights on his face. The lights repeatedly change from blue to red and then again to blue. And he slowly stopped breathing in it.

The policemen who came to manage the scene felt confused, because it was very rare to see a Chinese man in this area at this time of a day.

The man who lay on the ground didn’t look rich. Apparently he was not a tourist who came here to have a vacation.

Who was he?

Everyone there was totally lost about this.

And at the same time, a storm already started on the social media.

The old man’s name was Chen Guanming.

He was a farmer from Xuzhou of Jiangsu Province.

The first time when the world cast a spotlight on him was in 2012. Back then he rode his pedicab to London to ‘take part in’ the Olympics.

Through BBC’s report, this Chinese farmer whom no one knew suddenly got famous worldwide.

In 2016, Chen rode the pedicab to the Rio Olympics. And more international media came to do reports on him.

Everyone who got to interview him was astonished that this 60-year-old had such great dreams and energy.

This great Olympics Pursuit of his started in 2001.

In that year, Beijing was announced as the new host of the Olympics. Chen was thrilled by this. So he decided to use his own feet to pursue and feel this great event.

During the next 7 years, he almost went to every corner of China by this pedicab. From the most northern end Mohe to Hong Kong which lies on the southern coast.

Later, this dream of his started to go beyond just about Olympics and China.

He wanted to measure the whole world with his own feet. He wanted to experience all those things that he had not experienced when he was young.

In 2010, after making his own contribution in the Shanghai EXPO, he went on his journey to London.

He passed the southern border and went to the Southeast Asia and then went back north to the Tibet Plateau.

He got kidnapped when he was in Iraq but got free later.

He passed through the war zone between Pakistan and Afghanistan and took photos with soldiers there.

He went across Iran in the freezing wind of winter.

He rode his pedicab through Turkey, through Greece and through the streets of Italy.

Finally, he got to London in July of 2012.

At that point he was no longer an old man who fought alone for his dream.

He had won so many fans on the Internet.

These young people built a public page on Facebook for him and reported his journey in different languages to the whole world.

Later in London, Chen received the special invitation from the Rio Olympics Organizing Committee.

He didn’t hesitated. He started his new journey to Rio right away.

Chen didn’t got any sponsor.

In all those years overseas, he survived through part-time jobs and the help from kind people.

Everyday he rode for 50 kilometers in the day and slept in his pedicab during the night.

The first thing he did in the morning was always setting China’s national flag on the cab, because his motherland had always been the thing that he cared the most.

In his journey he used to post video footages and photos in WeChat Moments.

There were the scenery he saw in them and there were the people he met.

Through this purest method he showed the world a unique point of view to see China.

It’s not the fast-growing economy. It’s not the world-changing business models. It’s the dream that a most ordinary person in this distant land can have.

His last post was published just the day before the accident.

He was riding towards the glacier in southern Argentina.[/en

[en]That’s the nearest part of the civilized world to Antarctica. Chen wanted to see the end of the world with his own eyes.

But it all came to an end in this night.

In the morning of October 19th, on the same interstate, traffic showed once again.

The delivery vans were carrying raw food to the stores in the near cities. The commuting people were starting a new day’s work.

Another ordinary day came to Argentina just like it came to all the other countries.

But a musical note from the Far East vanished here.
