關於“吃”的一些英語表達學習

西方有這樣一句諺語：you are what you eat. 人如其食，一個人的飲食習慣忠實地反映了這個人的性格與生活環境。英語中有不少關於吃的習慣用語，大家都知道哪些，今天就帶大家一起來學習一下，感興趣的朋友可以一起往下看看這些英語表達吧。

eat someone's dust

eat someone's dust 當然不是“吃土”的意思，而是指“在競爭中遠遠落後於某人”。

舉個例子

We've been eating the competitor's dust since they released their new line of smartphones.

自從對家發佈了他們的新一代智能手機，我們就遠遠落後於人。

eat one's words

每個人都有不能兌現自己說過的話的時候，我們把這種情況叫做：食言;而英文中有種說法叫做：eat one's words，意思是收回曾說過的話。

舉個例子

You think I can't get an A in this class, but you'll have to eat your words when we get our report cards!

你認爲我在這堂課上得不到A，但等我們拿到成績單時，你就得收回你的話!

eat one's hat

eat one's hat與eat one's words的意思有些類似。當一個人說 eat his hat，那就是他十分肯定他說的話是對的，要是他錯了，他寧可把自己的帽子給吃了。這種情況就類似：如果我錯了，我就不姓趙/錢/孫/李...

舉個例子

One thing I do know something about--playing the stock market. And I'll eat my hat if it doesn't go up another three hundred points by the end of the year.

如果說我懂什麼，那就是玩股票。要是到今年年底股票價格不上升三百個百分點的話，我就把我帽子吃了。

I could eat a horse

I could eat a horse只是一種誇張的說法，意思是“餓極了”。中文中，我們一般會說“餓的能吃下一頭牛”...

舉個例子

When will dinner be ready? I'm so hungry I could eat a horse.

晚飯什麼時候好?我餓得能吃下一頭牛。

eat crow

烏鴉是極其聰明的鳥，不僅能識別人臉，並且有超強的記憶力，而且烏鴉還是一種非常團結的鳥類，會照顧彼此。敢“吃烏鴉”的人應該會一輩子被烏鴉攻擊吧。

eat crow 的確切意思是一個人因犯了一個很難堪的錯誤，不得不承認而感到丟臉。

舉個例子

That man running for mayor went around bragging he'd win the election by a big 50,000 majority. But he had to eat crow when the woman running against him won by more than 60,000 votes.

那個競選市長的人到處吹噓說他肯定能得到大多數選民的擁護，以五萬張選票當選市長。可是，現在他很丟臉，因爲那位和他一起競選的女候選人最後獲得六萬多張選票而當選市長。

eat one's heart out

eat one's heart out當然也不是“吃人心”的意思，而是“非常沉痛和絕望的悲痛”。

舉個例子

Ever since grandmother died, grandfather has been eating his heart out--he's lost all interest in life and won't even get out of bed to eat.

自從祖母去世後，祖父非常傷心，他對生活失去了一切興趣，都不願意起牀吃飯。

eat one's heart out還可以用在另一種場合，指半開玩笑地讓別人對你產生妒忌心理。

舉個例子

Eat your heart out—I got tickets to the concert and you didn't!

羨慕不，我有音樂會的票，你沒有!
