1. rhyme and rhythm 韻律/押韻和節奏
rhyme 韻律 如：
How nice this is a day
A girl would like to say
She's like a flower fair in May
That always tries her full display
這裏的 day/say/may/display屬於押韻。
rhythm 節奏
(注意：大寫字母是重讀音節，小寫字母爲輕讀音節）
How NICE /this IS / a DAY (三音步）
A GIRL / would LIKE / to SAY （三音步）
She's LIKE / a FLO /wer FAIR / in MAY （四音步）
That AL /ways TRIES / her FULL / disPLAY （四音步）
前兩行是輕重格三音步，後兩行是輕重格四音步，這樣構成了抑揚格的節奏。就像音樂中的兩拍子。音樂的拍節，在詩歌中就是節奏。
2. I've been a fool.
what a fool I've been=我曾是一個什麼樣的傻瓜
(the falling rain is) telling me just + what a fool I've been （瓢潑大雨）在告訴我，我曾是一個什麼樣的傻瓜
3. I wish 句式
wish 的用法：
表示與事實相反或不大可能實現的願望——虛擬語氣
1) wish that sb did sth 希望某人現在做某事
例：I wish I were as strong as you. 我希望和你一樣強壯。
(2) wish that sb had done sth 希望某人過去做某事
例：I wish you had told me earlier
要是你早點告訴我就好了。
(3) wish that sb would/could do sth 希望某人將來做某事
例：I wish you would succeed this time.
我希望你這次會成功。
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain. 我真希望雨停下來，讓我無望地哭泣。
4. 詞鏈兒：do XX in vain 白費功夫做XX / 徒勞地做XX
Peter feels he is doing the job in vain. Peter覺得自己做的工作是徒勞無效的（沒有意義）。
拓展：try in vain to do XX 試圖XX，但失敗了。
我怎麼也睡不着。
a. I tried in vain to sleep.
b. I tried to sleep, but in vain.
He tried to cover up his mistakes, but in vain. 他試圖掩飾他的錯誤，但辦不到。
