棉花是世界上最主要的農作物之一，其產量大、生產成本低，能製成各種規格的織物。我國是棉花產量居世界首位的生產大國，從區域上劃分，我國主要有三大產棉區域，爲新疆地區、黃河流域地區和長江流域地區。根據統計，2020年新疆棉產量約佔全國棉花產量87%。事實上，棉花並不是中國的本地作物，秦漢時期有關棉花的知識從印度傳入中國，漢字中的“棉”一詞也是從梵語中借來的。
