In many parts of the world, children and teenagers are committing more crimes. Why do you think this is the case? How should children and teenagers be punished?

It is true that juvenile delinquency has been on the increase in some countries these days. Reasons for this worrying trend vary and there are a range of possible punishments that could be applied.

To begin with, the upsurge in crimes committed by children and teenagers results from several reasons. Firstly, an underlying cause is the recent economic recession which forces today’s parents struggle harder to make ends meet. They consequently find themselves having less or even no time to look after their children. This plight may result in these vulnerable individuals associating with bad peers to find other source of care and thus, children are gradually led astray. Secondly, social media also play a part. In fact, the Internet, televisions have been bombarding children and teenagers with increasing amounts of violence, nudity, hedonistic lifestyles and so on. This bombardment could make them think that drug abuse, sexual harassment, fraud for example, are socially accepted. Therefore, they unconsciously commit more crimes.

Punishments for young criminals are various. Petty crime offenders should be forced to perform community service or participate in vocational schools specifically for criminals. The length of punishments can be reduced if they show positive changes in attitude. These two options not only create more social values but also offer them a chance of turning over a new leaf. After being released, young offenders must be kept under observation for a period of time. As for more serious crimes like mass murder, perpetrators must be sentenced to life imprisonment. This will definitely ensure a safe environment for citizens, an important factor to achieve social stability.

In conclusion, there are many reasons behind the increase in juvenile crime rates and the above-mentioned punishments deserve further consideration.

Social networking sites have huge negative impacts on both individuals and society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

As with all technological advances, the arrival of social networking sites presents both problems and potential solutions for humankind. Social media cannot easily be defined as good or bad. It’s influence on society and human behaviour is far too complex.

On one hand, social media provides people with the ability to communicate with almost anyone on the globe. Businesses thrive because transactions can take place conveniently and quickly. Political organization has been transformed too. It is now possible for protest groups to reach millions of people worldwide, spreading important messages about a range of serious issues, from the environment to human rights.

On the other hand, there is no doubt that social media sites have a number of drawbacks. Online abuse is a common problem. Instances of racism and misogyny have been reported frequently in the news, and social media has the unwanted distinction of providing a platform for people with vile opinions to spread messages of hate. Additionally, social media can be used by unscrupulous individuals to dupe people out of money through online scamming. There have also been reports that young children are being targeted for abuse by older individuals posing as children.

Clearly, social media presents us with opportunities to connect with others and to achieve economic growth more quickly. However, in its current form, too many devious individuals are able to escape sanction or prosecution, as the internet isn’t properly regulated. Those who spread racist messages or abuse others online are not subject to the law. Until this problem is addressed, social media will continue to be abused. On the whole, though, I believe social media is broadly a force for good.

Some groups, such as poor people and people from rural areas, think universities should make it especially easy for them to get access to university education. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is true that higher education is unavailable to many students residing in remote areas. So, it is suggested by some people that universities should make it easier for those groups to enroll into universities, which I strongly oppose that. I believe that they should receive the same standard as others in order to be educated in universities.

There are many reasons for my argument. Firstly, it would be quite unfair for those from wealthy family backgrounds. The cause lies in the fact that they have to participate in the same college entrance exam nationwide under the same assessment scheme. If their counterparts from rural areas are provided privileges with lower standards, it would become an in humiliation for their efforts and commitment they have made. Meanwhile, the poorer students would take it for granted when university education is offered to them. In this case, they may end up with no academic passion and initiatives.

Surely, due to the impoverty - stricken reality in many places throughout the world, some talented students fail to continue their study in itinerary education, which causes the high percentage of unemployment. However, this can be addressed strategically as long as the government can introduce some policies, like scholarship or loans, to help them get through.

In conclusion, I would argue that it is unjustified for schools to help needy students to be qualified for higher education by means of lowering the enrolling standard. They should ground themselves as their peers to get access to further study .

It is possible for scientists and tourists to travel to remote natural environments, such as South Pole. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

As remote natural places are expected to abound in variety of beautiful natural landscapes and resources, there is an upward tendency that both scientists and tourists become interested in going into such sites. At some level, I still believe in this development to do more good than harm.

First, natural resources are important for sustaining life and providing many everyday conveniences. Any kind of resources, from oil to copper, are getting scarcer in recent decades as the rapidly developing economies require more. Hence, scientists started getting more commitment on alternative energy sources from distant regions where are rich in all sorts of mineral resources. For instance, South Pole is known as the container of huge coal and gas reserve. As a result, local resources can be exploited to cater for the use for all human beings and solve some extreme resources urgency in the globe.

Furthermore, many remote places’ economies are highly reliant on the travel and tourism industry. Tourists traveling around these places may increase tourism and travel industry development, and also add jobs and contribute to an area’s economy. Additionally, “culture” is one of the chief consumables of tourism, and experiencing unusual cultures can be educational for the visitor and highly profitable for the community.

However, it should be noticed that the more people get into the distant unspoiled places, the more problems may be caused. For example, local ecosystems and environments can be affected by over exploited and land-based resort activities. With the travel decreasing due to fluctuations in the global economy, fewer people spend money on travel, leading to local recession in the places rely on tourism. Moreover, each area tries to maintain its own distinct history and culture. When these cultures come into contact with the strong forces of globalization, maintaining traditional local culture often becomes quite difficult.

To conclude, I approve of that scientists and tourists visiting remote natural areas can help tap potential natural resources and ensure more people have the chances to appreciate the beautiful scenes, only if they could travel responsibly and conserve the environment and improve the well-being of local people.
