Malaysia on Thursday announced it would scrap visa-free entry for North Koreans — the latest diplomatic fallout from last month’s assassination of Kim Jong Nam in Kuala Lumpur.

The move was aimed at safeguarding national security, according to Zahid Hamidi, Malaysia’s deputy prime minister.

Mr Kim, half brother of North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un, was murdered with what police say was the deadly nerve agent VX while he waited to board a flight to Macau in Kuala Lumpur International Airport last month.

The assassination is widely believed to have been instigated by Pyongyang, which had a standing kill order targeting the late Mr Kim since 2012, according to South Korean intelligence.

Police in Malaysia have already detained one North Korean suspect, 45-year-old Ri Jong Chol, and are seeking to question at least six more, including a diplomat from Pyongyang’s embassy in Malaysia.

Mr Kim died minutes after being smeared in the face with a liquid by two women. Those who allegedly committed the act — 28-year-old Doan Thi Huong and 25-year-old Siti Ashyah — on Wednesday appeared in court charged with murder, but did not enter a formal plea.

They earlier told government officials they had been duped into the murder, believing they were performing a stunt for a reality TV show.

The incident has prompted growing tensions between Kuala Lumpur and Pyongyang, which has denied any involvement.

A report last week by North Korea’s state-run KCNA news agency hit out at authorities in Malaysia over its response to the death, saying it was engaging in a “conspiratorial racket launched by the South Korean authorities”.

Before the death, the two nations enjoyed relatively cordial relations and visa-free travel. Experts believe Malaysia has long courted North Korea with a view to reaping potential economic benefits should the reclusive nation open up.

On Tuesday, a high level North Korean diplomatic delegation arrived in Kuala Lumpur in a bid to convince Malaysia to return the body without further delay.

Authorities in the Southeast Asian nation have insisted on due process and returning the body to Mr Kim’s next of kin.
