The official in charge of the hunt for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has declared its disappearance “an unprecedented missing aircraft mystery” and said tantalising leads reported at the weekend had evaporated.

“We have not found anything that appears to be objects from the aircraft let alone the aircraft,” Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, director-general of Malaysia’s Department of Civil Aviation, said on Monday in Kuala Lumpur. “We will be intensifying our efforts to locate the aircraft.”

On Sunday, media reports said that a Vietnamese plane had spotted a possible door from flight MH370, which disappeared early Saturday morning en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew aboard. But ships could not reach the area before night fell and the object was not located when the search resumed at dawn.

“That report was not verified officially by the Vietnamese authorities,” Mr Azharuddin said. “The Vietnamese authorities confirmed that they had not spotted any such object.”

He added that an object resembling the aircraft’s tail had in fact turned out to be flotsam. “We need concrete evidence. We need parts of the aircraft to do a forensic study.”

Malaysia Airlines’ shares fell as much as 20 per cent on Monday morning.

Investigators are also looking into the backgrounds of two men who flew on stolen Italian and Austrian passports, and are reviewing CCTV footage of them at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Mr Azharuddin said that all checked luggage on the flight had been properly screened by X-ray equipment, while bags belonging to five people who did not board the aircraft were removed before it took off. “The security at KLIA already complies with international standards,” he said.

He added said that more than 30 aircraft and 40 ships from eight countries are now involved in the search, which initially focused on a 50 mile radius around the position where the plane disappeared and has since expanded. Samples of an oil slick found in waters between Malaysia and Vietnam are being tested to confirm if it came from the aircraft.

“For the aircraft to just go missing like that, there are many theories,” Mr Azharuddin said. “We are equally puzzled as well.”

Investigators are also examining the possibility, first raised by Malaysia’s defence minister on Sunday, that the aircraft may have turned back towards Kuala Lumpur before disappearing.

Malaysian authorities will be meeting with specialists from the US Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board. Australian and British aviation authorities have also offered help in the investigation.
