There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them.
從前有位國王想要獎勵能將寧靜最好詮釋出來的藝術家。許多藝術家都試了。但國王只喜歡其中的兩幅畫，而且須從二者中選出最好的。
One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.
一副畫畫的是一個平靜的湖。靜謐的湖水將周邊的山倒映出來，如同一面完美的鏡子。天空蔚藍，飄動着綿綿的白雲。看完後，所有人都覺得這幅畫最真切地表達了寧靜。
The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.
另一副圖畫也有山，但畫中的山崎嶇荒涼。灰暗的天空，雷雨交加。山的一邊瀑布急瀉而下。一切看起來一點都不寧靜。
But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest — in perfect peace.
但當國王仔細一看，他發現瀑布後的岩石縫裏有一叢小小的灌木。一隻鳥媽媽在樹叢裏搭了一個窩，它就這樣坐在自己的窩裏，坐在洶涌的瀑布之後---完全的寧靜!
