Call the shots原來的意思是“明白無誤地表現自己的願望或想法”，但是射箭（shot）爲何出現在這個短語中了。讓我們結合一個類似短語來找到一些端倪。Call one’s shot這一短語產生的由來是：在射箭之前，射手爲了表示劍手的劍術高超，通常會宣佈他宣佈他射向的目標，但是如果有別人替射手，射手就必需按照別人宣佈的目標瞄準射箭。這種射箭項目中幫幫射手決定射擊行爲的行爲就是call one’s shots。後來，call the shots也有了“做決定”“發號司令”的意思。
