美國習慣用語 第603:表示道歉

蕭華，我剛纔見到我一個幾十年沒見的高中同學。幾十年不見，你還認得他嗎？認還是認得的。這位同學當年是個書呆子，大家都笑他。可是前幾年他發明了一個電腦軟件，一下子就成了百萬富翁。美國人有一個習慣用語是形容這種情況的：laugh all the way to the bank。Laugh是笑，bank是銀行， to laugh all the way to the bank，按字面來解釋就是一路笑着去銀行。但是，這個習慣用語的真正含義是，一個人一開始被別人看不起，可是後來正是這個人發了財，飛黃騰達，十分得意。

我們來聽一個例句。有個年輕人決定把錢投資在一部電影上，家裏人都笑他傻。結果呢？我們來聽聽他是怎麼說的。

例句-1：My brothers laughed at me for investing in a movie called The Matrix. They said I would lose all my money while they got rich in real estate. Well, let me tell you, The Matrix turned out to be a huge success! Now I'm the one who's laughing all the way to the bank.

這個年輕人說：我幾個哥哥都笑話我把錢投資在The Matrix這部電影上。他們說，我的錢會賠光的，而他們的房地產投資一定會發財。我告訴你，結果這部電影一舉成功，現在發財得意的是我，而不是他們。

說來也是，當初誰也不知道這部電影的賣座率會如何。可是它居然一炮打響。這年輕人當時可能也只是孤注一擲吧？

蕭華，你知道to laugh all the way to the bank這個習慣用語的出處嗎？Laugh all the way to the bank是20世紀六十年代開始流行的，所以是一個比較現代的說法。你知道嗎，另外還有一個說法，那就是：cry all the way to the bank--哭着去銀行。我知道。但是不管是cry，或是laugh，這兩種說法的意思是一樣的。

對，只是說cry all the way to the bank是具有諷刺性的，而laugh all the way to the bank是直接了當的，也是大家普遍使用的。

我們再來聽一個例子。在美國有不少理財公司，這些公司的專業人員專門給人們提供投資的建議。我們來聽聽一個投資者是怎麼說的。

股票經紀人的收入是有保證的，因爲他們是靠收費，投資者就不同了，全靠股市行情。說到靠不靠得上，美國人常用的一個習慣用語就是：to bank on something. Bank一般是指銀行，但是這裏說的bank是用作動詞。To bank on something，意思是依賴，依靠或指望。一個妻子經常受丈夫虐待。這個妻子的弟弟非常不滿。他抱怨說：

例句-3：I hate how he is treating my sister. He came home drunk again last night and started swearing at her. Then this morning he acted so sweet and apologetic, but you can bank on him doing the same thing all over again.

這個弟弟說：他那麼對待我姐姐讓我非常痛恨。昨晚他回家的時候又喝醉了，然後就罵我姐姐。可今天早晨，他又表現得很殷勤，表示道歉，可是你敢肯定他一定會故技重演的。

To bank on something這個習慣用語是19世紀後期開始出現的。 爲什麼用bank銀行這個詞呢？因爲把錢存在銀行裏通常是比較可靠的。所以，如果我們說you can bank on it，那就是說，那是可靠的，有指望的。下面我們再來聽一個例句。有個人對郵局的快遞服務非常滿意，他正在向他的朋友推薦。他說：

例句-4：Don't worry about a thing. They'll get it to Beijing on time and in one piece. I've used them many times before and I've never had a problem. You can bank on them doing a good job.

這個人說：別擔心，他們會把東西完整無損地按時送到北京的。我多次使用過他們的服務，從來沒有出現過問題。你可以肯定他們會做得很好的。
