Echo and Narcissus

Narcissus was a handsome youth. His lovely face and graceful form were the admiration of all who looked upon him. And he knew it. He was proud that he thought no one but himself was worthy to see his youthful beauty. Thus given up to sweet thoughts of self, Narcissus avoided all company. He roamed the wooded little valleys every day, madly in love with himself.

When he was delightfully wandering through the woods one day, a wood fairy maiden, Echo by name, caught sight of him. She was excited at once. Joyfully coming down towards Narcissus, she stretched out her loving arms. To her dismay, however, the young man roughly brushed her aside and went by without so much as a glance at her. The poor fairy maiden's face turned red and quickly withdrew to a shady spot, following the object of her love with her longing eyes.

Presently Narcissus stopped to drink from a little stream. Kneeling down on the bank,he saw a lovely face in the clear water. His heart gave a beat. lie smiled and was smiled back to. Thinking that it must be a maiden in love with him, he bent down to kiss her. But as soon as he touched the clear surface the lovely face disappeared. The angry youth was now desperate. Never had he been looked down upon like that before. Day and night,he stayed at the stream without drinking and eating. Before long he died, never suspecting that his maiden was just his own image in the stream. The gods took pity on the fair dead body and turned it into a flower bearing his name. This flower was the first narcissus. All the flowers of this family, when they grow by the side of a pond or a stream, still bend their beautiful heads and look at the reflection of their own faces in the water.

The intoxicated Echo saw all this. Slowly she became weak, until at last nothing remained of her except her voice.

The North Wind and the Sun had a contest of strength. They decided to allot the palm ofvictory to whichever of them could strip the clothes off a traveler.

The North Wind first tried his power. He blew with all his might. As the man clung on to hisclothes, the North Wind attacked him with greater force. But the man, uncomfortable from thecold, put on more clothes. So, disheartened, the North Wind left him to the Sun.

The Sun shone moderately, and the man removed his extra cloak. Then the Sun darted lightwhich was more scorching until the man, not being able to stand the heat, took off his clothesand went to take a dip in a nearby river.

This fable shows that persuasion is often more effective than force.

Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time. Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and full of violence. So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. But with you I will make a covenant. Make yourself an ark of cypress wood, make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. You shall go into the ark,you and your sons, your wife and your sons' wives with you. And you shall bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female. to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. You are to take and store every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.'

Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came on the earth. Noah went into the ark with his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives. And into the ark with Noah went one pair, male and female, of all beasts, clean and unclean, of birds and of everything that crawls on the ground, two by two, as God had rds the end of seven days the waters of the flood came upon the earth.

On the seventeenth day of the second month, all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. find rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights. The flood kept coming on the earth for forty days, and as the waters increased they lifted up the ark high above the waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than twenty feet. Every living thing that moved on the earth perished-birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.

The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.
