He that Loves a Rosy Cheek

He that loves a rosy cheek
Or a coral lip admires,
Or from star-like eyes doth seek
Fuel to maintain his fires；
As old Time makes these decay,
So his flames must waste away.

But a smooth and steadfast mind,
Gentle thoughts, and calm desires,
Hearts with equal love combined,
Kindle never-dying fires：---
Where these are not, I despise
Lovely cheeks or lips or eyes．

美與愛

他深愛紅如玫瑰的面頰，
他鐘情赤如珊瑚的雙脣；
他尋求如繁星閃耀的明眸，
以維繫他似火的青春；
當時光催老美麗的容顏，
他的青春之火也燃燒罄京?

這不是真正的美麗，
這哪祘崇高的愛情；
真美是柔情似水，
真愛是心心相印；
這才能把人生的火焰點燃，
千古不滅，萬世長存。
沒有美的內心世界，
外表的容顏不值分文。

托馬斯•卡魯(Thomas Carew1595—1654)英國詩人 愛美之心人皆有之。但美並不只是外表的容顏,更重要的是內在的心靈。這首詩表達了詩人對美與愛的獨特思考；前一小節是反面的鋪墊,後一小節是精切的妙語。 其中 “真美是柔情似水，真愛是心心相螢的詩行是思想的凝練, 也是詩的旨趣所在。
