校園口語第203課:清明節的"紙錢"

每年的公曆四月五日前後爲清明節，是二十四節氣之一。今年的清明節是4月4日。在二十四個節氣中，既是節氣又是節日的只有清明。清明節是我國傳統節日，也是最重要的祭祀節日。

清明節可以說 Tomb Sweeping Day，也可以說　Qingming Festival。
The Qingming Festival in spring is the occasion for visiting ancestral graves.
清明節是掃墓拜祭先人的日子。
The Qingming Festival is a statutory public holiday in mainland China.
清明節在中國大陸地區是法定節假日。

清明節有種掃墓的習俗叫“前三後四”，也就是說百姓掃墓應該選擇清明節當天的前三天或者後四天去進行掃墓、祭拜逝去的親人。爲了倡導低碳祭拜，近幾年，百姓們衍生出了許多低碳環保的祭拜方式，“紙錢”祭拜將逐漸淡去。
說到“紙錢”，英語中是怎麼表述的呢？大家可能第一時間想到的就是paper money，不過字面上的確是“紙錢”的意思，實際上paper money的意思是“紙質貨幣”，與“金屬貨幣”metal money相對應，是“人世”的錢，不是燒給死者的紙錢哦：
例：The Song dynasty was the first government in world history to issue paper money.
宋朝是世界上第一個發行紙幣的政府。

那麼，燒給死者的紙錢是什麼呢？一起來看看有哪些說法：
By overloading the path with spiritual money, hopefully all troubled souls on the way will be too occupied with the money and leave the traveling-soul alone.
在路上灑滿紙錢，亡魂就會忙於撿錢，不會騷擾過路者。
Yan Wang is normally depicted wearing a Chinese judge's cap and sometimes appears onChinese Hell Bank Notes.
閻王通常穿着一身古代官服，紙錢上也會有他的形象。
以上兩種說法，spiritual money和hell bank notes都比較形象地說明了“紙錢”的本質，一是象徵意義上的錢（spiritual），二是燒給陰間（hell）的人使用的鈔票（bank notes）　　
所以，紙錢我們可以說　spiritual money或者 hell bank notes
