"布朗尼加分"口語課堂:危急時刻顯真容

我們都知道，現在的很多習慣用語都是從賭局中的一些專用語演變而來的。例如Cash in chips, 把籌碼換成錢，現在常用來指“鳴金收兵”，play a hand，出牌，現在喻指“嘗試”；今天我們要介紹的這個短語when the chips are down 也出自牌桌，賭局之中。Chips有“籌碼”的意思。一旦籌碼下了，也就沒有回頭餘地了。現在，我們用這個短語表示“在重要關頭；到關鍵時刻；危急時刻”。首先來看一個小對話：

A: I think James’ the right person for the job. 我覺得James適合這個工作。

B: Do you really think he’s the chief material? 你真覺得他是當領導的材料嗎？

A: James always appears to be undecided, but when the chips are down he makes up his mind and unswervingly acts on his decision. 總是表現得猶豫不決，但到關鍵時刻他下得了決心，並且堅定地按自己的決定行事。

很多人平時看着不起眼，表現不突出，關鍵時刻卻很能穩住陣腳。再比如下面這個例子。

Harold complains quite a lot, but when the chips are down he always defends his company and is really very loyal. Harold常常抱怨不斷，但在危急關頭，他總是護衛他的公司，而且非常忠誠。

與上面兩個例子不同的是，有些人平時看着很是斯文無害，但到了危急時刻，在利益面前卻可能出手毫不留情。比如：

You’ll see, I’ll show you, that when the chips are down, these civilized people, they’ll eat each other. 你會看到的，我來展示給你看，到關鍵時刻，這些文明人，會生吞掉對方。

危難時刻到是看出一個人本性的好時機。有人擔得起重任，得到擁戴；有人卻被扯下面紗，赤裸裸示人。好了，when the chips are down，您會怎樣表現呢？我們下期再見。
