美國習慣用語 第864:force one's hand

今天我收到了園藝俱樂部主席的電子郵件。郵件裏說，很遺憾我們今年的資金不足，所以要減少很多有趣的活動。我很奇怪爲什麼她不等下次見面時告訴我們，後來才知道原來是有人看到了財務報表，去質問主席了。這也讓我想到一句習慣用語，那就是： force one's hand。

大家都知道，force意思是強迫，而hand是手，force one's hand, 意思就是強迫某人做某事，特別是在沒有準備好的情況下。

在上面的例子裏, 我們的俱樂部成員質疑園藝俱樂部的財政情況，迫使主席馬上發郵件跟大家說明。She forced the president's hand.

在下面的例子裏，一名員工還沒準備好，就不得不告訴大家他要退休的消息。我們一起來聽一聽:

例句-1：I didn't intend to announce my retirement quite yet. I've told my buddy at work not to say anything to anyone. But after a few too many drinks, he accidentally mentioned that I would soon be leaving the company. I know he didn't mean to force my hand. But I had no choice but to confirm the news.

這段話是說: 我本來沒想公佈退休的消息。我告訴我辦公室的好友要爲我保密。可是幾杯酒下肚，這位老兄就提到了我馬上要離開公司。我知道他並不是這個意思，但我不得不跟大家證實了這個消息。

這就是酒精會帶來的問題，它會讓你做出一些愚蠢的舉動。我記得我奶奶就曾經告訴我，如果你想保守祕密，就不要告訴任何人。就像有些驚喜派對，有時候很難做到保守祕密， 搞不好的話，The honoree will figure out what you're up to and forces your hand，有時被派對主角發現祕密籌備的事，你沒辦法只好承認。

小孩子淘氣，弄壞家裏東西是常事。不知道大家小時候有沒有類似的經歷? 下面這兩個小孩就幹了件壞事。我們來聽聽他們受到了怎樣的懲罰。

例句-2：We shouldn't have been playing basketball in the house. That's how we broke a window in the living room. We must have looked guilty. 這聽起來還真有些耳熟，我記得原來我媽媽眼睛就特別尖，我幹了什麼錯事，她都能一下子發現！
