If the tradition of ambition is to have vitality, it must be widely shared; and it especially must be highly regarded by people who are themselves admired, the educated not least among them.

本句的最大難點是分號的作用，通常分號是分割兩句話，但本句中if引導狀語從句，主句是分號和and共同連接的並列結構，一個是it must be widely shared，一個是it especially must be highly regarded by people ，people後面是who引導的定語從句。結尾處among them表明後面是其中的一類人，the educated 是表示一類人，not least前面省略了謂語動詞is。is to have在此處具有強調的意思，可以譯成“就是”。
