A global survey of charitable giving conducted on 135 nations might give us a renewed sense of faith in humanity. A whopping 2.3 billion people worldwide reported helping a stranger over the course of one month last year, and over 1.4 billion donated money to charitable causes in 2014.

Only five of the countries in this year's World Giving Index Top 20 are members of the G20, a forum of the world's largest economies. Less affluent places like Sri Lanka and Trinidad and Tobago featured in the top 10.

Another high-ranking country with a large population of the followers of that religion is Sri Lanka, which ranked ninth in the Index.
