Nobel laureates Bernard L Feringa and Kurt Wuthrich have filed applications for permanent residency in Shanghai and are expected to be granted Chinese "green cards" by the end of this year.

The two Nobel laureates are reportedly to be among the first batch of Nobel Prize winners who are able to work in Shanghai with permanent residency.

Bernard L Feringa won 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and now works as a guest professor in East China University of Science and Technology, leading his research team in developing light-stimulus responsive materials which enjoy a promising prospect in medical treatment, electronics, energy conservation and other fields.

Kurt Wuthrich, the 2002 Nobel laureate in chemistry is a distinguished professor in Shanghai Tech University.

His team is working on molecular mechanism of G-protein-coupled receptors in the human body by using liquid NMR technologies, with the goal of creating breakthroughs in targeted medicine.

"As an innovation center, Shanghai needs to introduce talent and create an environment in which senior foreign talents can give full play to their potential," said an official from Zhang Jiang National Innovation Demonstration Zone.
