南非冷知識：南非有地表最大的隕石坑

地表可見的最大隕石坑就在南非，整個隕石坑的直徑達到了300公里（相當於上海到南京的距離了），據說當時創造它的那顆隕石有山那麼大。

還好，這次撞擊是發生在人類誕生以前，不然的話可能就是滅絕性的事件了。

The world’s largest visible crater is in South Africa. Around 2,030 million years ago a meteor the size of a mountain (about 10km across) fell to earth in South Africa’s Free State making a crater 300km across; it is the oldest crater made by either a comet or meteorite and reportedly the site of the largest energy release in history. In 2015, scientists claimed to have found a bigger crater (around 400km wide) underground in the Austrlian outback, although it is not visible on the earth’s.

南非有世界上最大的可見隕石坑。大約二十億三千萬年前，一顆山那麼大的流星（直徑約10公里）落在南非自由邦之上，形成了一個直徑300公里的隕石坑；這是由彗星或隕石形成的最古老的隕石坑，而且據報道，這是歷史上最大的能量釋放點。2015年科學家表示，在澳大利亞內陸的地下發現了一個更大的隕石坑（約400公里寬），不過這個隕石坑在地球表面看不到。
