Jim Hill has learned that dreams can come true. Born in Mexico, Jim grew up in Texas in a poor family. As a child, Jim was a bookworm and he loved school. At 15, he already dreamed of being a teacher.

One day at school, young Jim dropped by to see his guidance counselor. He told the counselor his plans for the future. But this guy said he would never be college material. He threw cold water on Jim's dream.

After graduating from high school, Jim got a job as a janitor at Mayfield High School in New Mexico. He cleaned bathrooms and swept floors. The years went by. Now and then, he talked to his wife about his childhood dream of being a teacher.

One day, when Jim was 41 years old, his wife gave him some papers. She had enrolled him in college! "It was strange going back to school at my age," said Jim. "I felt like an old man around all those kids!" The words of his first professor changed his life. "Everyone in this room is capable of succeeding. You can all make an A," he said. Jim hit the books and made his first A in college.

Jim finished college, and now he's teaching at Mayfield High School. His students love him. "Many students don't realize that I'm the same man who used to sweep the floors in this school," said Jim.

Jim Hill從小就是一個bookworm,書蟲,也就是愛讀書的人,並且dream of being a teacher, dream of doing something夢想做某事。例如:Many boys dream of becoming pilots.

然而,一天他dropped by his guidance sounselor,去見他的輔導員。Drop by意爲make a shor visit,順路拜訪,非正式拜訪。這個老師卻threw cold water on him. I want to go to medical school but my dad throw cold water on this idea. I don't want to throw cold water on your ideas, but I think you are over optimistic .

Be capable of doing something有能力做某件事。每個人都以make an A. 大家都知道在歐美等國,學生的學習成果習慣用A,B,C,D來劃分等級。Make an A自然就是能取得好成績的意思了。

It's good to hit the books, but you need to get out once in a while.
