Oil prices slid more than 2 per cent as asset classes fell across the board in the Asian morning, pushing a broad index of commodity prices to its lowest level this century and heightening global disinflationary fears.

The Bloomberg Commodity Index, a 22 member gauge covering everything from egg futures to natural gas, fell 1.2 per cent to $86.79, its lowest since 1999. Even the price of gold was down 0.4 per cent, as investors sold quality assets to raise much-needed cash to meet margin calls.

The commodities index is now down 40 per cent over three years, including a drop of nearly 17 per cent this year.

The price of West Texas Intermediate oil, the US benchmark, fell 2.5 per cent to below $39.50 a barrel — its lowest since February 2009. Brent crude, the international standard, retreated 2.1 per cent to $44.50 a barrel, a level last seen in March 2009.

Cheaper oil is weighing heavily on equities too, causing a tumble in energy-related stocks from Japan to Australia, where stock indices are down 3.9 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively.

Since oil prices began to collapse in mid-June 2013, WTI and Brent prices have fallen 63 per cent and 61.5 per cent, respectively, and the resultant disinflationary pressures are taking a toll across the globe.
