Ruan Lingyu, an early Chinese film actress, birth name Ruan Fenggen, original hometown Xiangshan (Zhongshan), Guangdong, was born in Shanghai on April 26, 1910 and died on March 8, 1935, aged 24.

阮玲玉,中國早期女影星,原名阮鳳根,原籍廣東香山(今中山),1910年4月邡日出生於上海,1935年3月8日去世,終年24歲。

Her father's early death caused her staying with her mother as service maid since her childhood. Her mother had been provident to let her go to school. She had been a student at Chongde Middle School for Women in Shanghai. In 1926 she passed the examination and was admitted to Shanghai Star Film Company in order to earn her salt and support her mother, where she starred her maid film The Couple In Name in 1927.

因爲父親早逝,孩童時代就隨母爲人幫傭。母親節衣縮食,讓她上學,曾就讀於上海崇德女子中學。1926年,爲自立謀生,奉養母親,考入上海明星影片公司。於1927主演處女作《掛名夫妻》,從此踏人影壇,相繼在“明星”、“大中華百合”公司主演近20部影片。1930年加人聯華影業公司,主演該公司創業作《故都春夢》(1930),扮演妓女燕燕獲得成功,奠定了她在影壇的地位。

Since then, she entered the filmdom and successively starred over 20 films in Star and Dazhonghua Baihe. In 1930 she joined Lianhua Film Company, starring in The Dream of the Ancient Capital (1930) which started its business. Her successfully acted prostitute Yanyan, thus established her position in filmdom.

此後,她在《野草閒花》(1930)、《三個摩登女性》(1933 )、《小玩意》(1933)、 《城市之夜》(1933)、《人生》(1934)、《歸來》(1934)、《再會吧,上海》(1934)、《香雪海》(1934)、《神女》(1934)、《新女性》(1934)、《國風》(1935)等一系列影片中擔任主角,成功塑造了各種飽受苦難的中國婦女形象,有女工、村婦、教員、舞女、妓 女、藝人、作家等。

After that, she played leading roles in a serial of films, like Wild Flowers by the Road (1930),Three Modern Ladies (1933),The Little Toys (1933),Night in the City ( 1933) , The Life ( 1934) , Coming Home (1934) , Goodbye9 Shanghai ( 1934), Scented Snow Sea ( 1934 ) , Goddess ( 1934) , New Women ( 1934 ) and National Customs (1935), etc.,successful in shaping kinds of Chinese women images fed up with tribulation, including workwoman, countrywoman, woman school teacher, dancing girl, prostitute, actress, writer and so on.

其中,《神女》是最具代表性的作品,她精湛的演技使此片成爲默片時代的經典作品,代表着默片表演藝術的最高水平。《神女》導演吳永剛曾用 “感光最快的膠片”作比喻,給予她高度讚譽。在20世紀30年代的中國影壇上,她以重拍次數最少而成爲導演們樂於與之合作的演員,也是最有票房號召力的演員。

Goddess was her most reprehensive one among them. Her exquisite performance in Goddess made it a classic in the age of silent films, and it represented the highest level of silent film performing art. Wu Yonggang, the director of Goddess, had compared her to "the film to be sensitized" and thought highly of her. In the film field of 1930s,her least reshoot-ing record made her the actress whom directors most willing to cooperate with, as well as the box-office appealing one.

“人言可畏”的巨大壓力下辭世,這是中國電影藝壇無可估量的損失。一位20世紀30年代最優秀的女表演藝術家,中國電影史上最著名的女影星,中國第一位引起社會廣泛讚譽的女演員——阮玲玉就這樣隕落了。1995年,電影界舉行慶典,爲她頒發了“電影世紀獎”和“最佳女演員獎”,由其主演的影片《神女》也榮獲優秀影片獎。

All 29 films starred by Ruan Lingyu were silent till the last film New Women in which interlude songs were begun to provide except accompanying music and was a try transmitting from silence to sound. It was a pity that Ruan Lingyu ended her life under the severe pressure that the "tongue is not steel, yet it cuts". Her death was an unevadable loss for Chinese film art field. Ruan Lingyu, the most excellent performing artist of 1930s, the most notable actress in the Chinese film history, the first Chinese actress who aroused extensive acclaim in the society fell down. In 1995,Chinese film system held a ceremony,awarding her the “Centennial Award” in Chinese film as well as the Best Actress, and Goddess won the Excellent Film Award.

阮玲玉一生中拍攝的29部影片均爲默片,直到最後一部《新女性》(1934)纔開始在伴奏音樂之外配有若干插曲,從而成爲無聲片向有聲片過渡的嘗試。可惜 阮玲玉不久竟在

In April, 1998, her statue was completed at the Fu Shou Cemetery of Qing Pu County, Shanghai.

1998年4月,其塑像在上海青浦縣福壽陵園落成。
