中國人最易誤解的話第22期:運動員的腳

（正譯）他患香港腳。

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection of the skin that causes scaling, flaking, and itch of affected areas. It is caused by fungi in the genus Trichophyton and is typically transmitted in moist areas where people walk barefoot, such as showers or bathhouses. Although the condition typically affects the feet, it can spread to other areas of the body, including the groin. Athlete's foot can be treated by a number of pharmaceutical and other treatments.

腳氣，也就是足癬（Tinea Pedis），中國有俗名稱爲爛腳丫，腳氣瘡，還有一個特別的稱謂，叫香港腳。香港腳的來源據說是英國人初佔香港，因爲當地的氣候潮溼悶熱，士兵們紛紛得了爛腳丫，故爾稱之爲香港腳。香港腳的對應俗名叫運動員腳（Athlete's Foot），起源當然是因爲此病更常見於運動員，流行病學調查發現運動員比普通人羣有雙倍的機率患此病，有的調查研究中發現運動員高達70%-80%有腳氣。估計人一生有70%的機率在某個時刻被感染腳氣。

腳氣因真菌感染而起，導致腳局部感染潰爛。真菌感染可能自始至終伴隨着人類，但並不常見，故而足癬的描述歷史短暫，最早對它的描述見於1888年，而在1908年威特菲爾德才首次將這一罕見疾病歸因於感染。爲什麼遲至1908年醫學界仍然認爲足癬是罕見疾病呢？是什麼因素讓一個罕見疾病在100年左右就變爲常見病的呢？
