"布朗尼加分"口語課堂:引起爭論的骨頭

的網友朋友們，大家好。生活中我們常常會因爲一些或大或小的原因與他人意見相左，甚至產生衝突。所有的爭論都有緣起。就像兩隻小狗很可能會因爲搶一根骨頭而打起架。英語中就常常用a bone of contention“引起雙方爭鬥的一根骨頭”這一習語，來表達爭論的原因。

A bone of contention 爭論的原因

Contention 意思是“論點；爭論”。比如：

It is his contention that taxes are too low. 他的論點是課稅太輕。

瞭解了contention 的意思，我們來看看a bone of contention的用法。來看一個對話：

A: What’s the problem? What set you two at loggerheads?

發生什麼事兒了？你們兩個爲什麼吵起來了？

B: He insisted on my going with him. But I’m too busy, you know.

他非得讓我和他一起去。但你知道我很忙。

A: I see. The going or not going issue is the bone of contention between you.

我明白了。是不是一起去就是你們之間吵架的原因了。

再來看一個例句。

The border has always been a bone of contention between these two countries. 這兩國之間的邊界問題歷來是爭議的焦點。

如果和某人爭論，你認爲對方的觀點根本就是站不住腳的，可以用not hold water來表示。它的字面意思是“裝不了水”，藉此形容觀點漏洞百出。

His opinion doesn’t hold water. 他的說法站不住腳。

Miller is a dishonest person. His words can’t hold water. Miller是個不誠實的人，他的話經不起驗證。

He has make up his mind to prove that Mary’s argument doesn’t hold water. 他決心要證明瑪麗的論點是站不住腳的。
