The inquest, on 10 June, established that it was suicide.

The evidence was perfunctory, not for any irregular reason, but because it was so transparently clear a case.

By the side of his bed was half an apple, out of which several bites had been taken.

They did not analyse the apple, and so it was never properly established that, as seemed perfectly obvious, the apple had been dipped in the cyanide.
