下面我們來細究開篇提到的例句，先來來回顧一下：Every time you go on strike, they put in a nice big claim for expenses and go and have a big bang out of the proceeds.

這句話是說：你們罷一次工，他們就去報銷一次，領了幾萬銀子，花一個暢心暢意。在這個句子中，我們要注意一下三個要點。

第一個要點是表示“進行罷工”的短語：go on strike。Go on是“進行，發生”的意思，strike做名詞用，表示罷工，go on strike的意思即爲“舉行罷工，進行罷工”。再如：

The workers banded with people from all walks of ligfe to go on strike. 工人們聯合各界民衆一起罷工。

第二個要點是表示“提出，提交”的動詞短語：put in，原滋原味的解釋爲：formally request or apply for that thing。再如：

I decided to put in for a job as deputy secretary.我決定申請副書記一職。

The ministry ordered 113 of these and later put in a request for 21 more.這些東西該部訂購了113個，後來又追加了21個。

第三個要點是表示“要求，索取”的名詞短語：claim for (something)。Claim for既可以做名詞短語，也可以做動詞短語，在此特別注意表示“要求，索取什麼”，claim後面個介詞，這個介詞一定是for。例如：

Can I claim for yesterday's journey?能支付給我昨天的差旅費 嗎 ?

They intend to claim for damages against the three doctors. 他們打算向那3位醫生索要損害賠償。

Head teachers yesterday submitted a claim for a 9 per cent pay rise.校長們昨天提交了一份要求加薪9%的聲明。

Baguet's success staked his claim for a place in Belgium's world championship team. 巴古埃特的成功使他有資格成爲比利時世界錦標賽參賽隊伍中的一員。

那麼，跟第二個要點聯繫起來，表示“提出……的要求，提出…..的申請”，則可以用put in a claim for something這個短語。例如：

I took the watch I found to the police station but nobody has put in a claim for it. 我已把拾到的手錶送到警察局去，但是還沒有人去認領。
