當地時間4月30日，美國菲律賓舉行了兩國首次“2+2”高層磋商。在此次會議上，美國拒絕就黃巖島問題站隊，呼籲各方通過外交途徑解決爭端。

美國於本週一表示，不會在中菲黃巖島問題上站隊，並重申希望通過外交途徑解決領土爭端。

上述報道中的take sides就是我們平時常說的“站隊”，即在有兩方發生爭議的時候表明自己支持某一方。例如：Whatever you do, I'll take sides with you.（無論你做什麼，我都會站在你這邊。）這裏的take sides in the Huangyan Island standoff則告訴我們，如果想表達“在某件事上站隊”就可以用take sides in something來表示。

在這個詞組中，side也可以單獨做動詞用，表示“站在某一邊”的意思，比如：She always sided with my brother.（她總是帶在我哥哥那邊。）或者Why do you always side against me ?（你爲什麼總站在我的對立面?）
