WORDS & EXPRESSIONS

1.
Blair: At last, my life is perfect. My only problem... How to relate to my character, Countess Olenska is a ruined woman with no prospects, and let's face it. I have the world on a string. Of course, there is the odious task of playing opposite Dan Humphrey.

Countess:
have somebody on a string: to completely control someone's behaviour e.g. She can get him to do anything she wants - she's got him on a string. "I've Got The World on a String" is a 1933 popular song composed by Harold Arlen, with lyrics written by Ted Koehler.

2.
Elle: Carter, I have to use the ladies' room. Get me a drink?
Chuck: Just... just wait a sec.
Carter: Come on, Bass. Don't cause a scene.

Don't cause a scene: 不要惹是生非

3.
Queller: This is just a dress rehearsal. There are people out there. Don't let the...
Blair: Headmistress! There you are. Nelly Yuki claimed she got into Yale early. There must be some mistake
Queller: I'm sorry, Blair. There's no mistake. I was on my way to tell you that I received a call from Dean Berube. They've rescinded your acceptance and given the spot to Nelly.

dress rehearsal: a full rehearsal shortly before the first performance
I was on my way to tell you that…: 我正要告訴你……,這裏的on my way表示“正打算,正準備”,不是“在路上”的意思。

4.
Vanessa: So how does it feel to play May Welland?
Serena: Well, it feels like my character's rubbing off on me. May's fiancé pays no attention to her, and as for me...
Vanessa: Are you talking about Julian? Well, the play opens tomorrow. He's just distracted.
Serena: Julian, hey. I was just thinking, it would be really helpful for my friend Vanessa's documentary to hear more about your vision for the show. Why don't we all grab a bite to eat?
Julian: I suppose it couldn't hurt to, uh, give my actors a little more insight into my intentions.

rubbing off on: 因接觸/相處而對…
He's just distracted: 他只是有點心不在焉
grab a bite to eat: 去吃點東西,隨便吃點,沒有lunch/dinner那麼正式。
I suppose it couldn't hurt: 那樣也無妨

5.
Blair: Calm down, Serena? She got me axed from Yale. You're seriously taking her side? Fine. But a word of advice... She will be destroyed, and you don't want to become collateral damage.

ax: To remove ruthlessly or suddenly
take her side: 站在她那一邊
collateral damage: 附帶損害unintentional civilian casualties or damage to civilian property caused by military action

6.
Julian: Thanks, ladies. Don't worry. It's taken care of.
Serena: And, uh, it's been a lot of fun. It has. Uh, you know, all this talk about Bette Davis has... has really got me thinking about my character. You know, I think I could use some more coaching before the show. What do you say?
Julian: Sure. Say 4:00? Text me your address.
Serena: Great.
Vanessa: So what are you up to?
Serena: You mean what we are up to. I may not be a huge classic film buff, but I have read "Cyrano."

It's taken care of: Julian
What do you say: 你說呢,你覺得如何?後面的那個say 4:00裏的say是what about的意思,say還可以表示“比如”,用法跟for example一樣。
what are you up to: 這裏Vanessa的意思是“你想幹嘛,你有什麼預謀?”,在其他場合這句話可以當問候語來用,表示“近來如何,最近在忙什麼呢”的意思。
buff: One who is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a subject, film buff就是很對電影很有研究的人。

7.
Blair: Do you know how hard it is to get revenge when your enemy is changing every five minutes?
Dorota: You need to calm nerves and warm vocal chord. You want tea?
Blair: No, I want Dan Humphrey's head on a platter.

on a platter: 用盤子端上來。

8.
Dan: I know you were just looking out for me. And Rachel... well, she, uh, she turned out to be not who I thought she was or at least not anymore.
Rufus: I'm sorry, too, son.

look out for: to feel responsibility for someone or something; watch out for somebody / something.

9.
Serena: B, I've been looking everywhere for you. I know that was Rachel that sent the "gossip girl" blast.

10.
Blair: Spare me, Serena. I don't need a stirring speech telling me what a good person I am. I know I'm not. Yale kicking me out is the karma I've earned.

stirring: stimulating

ALLUSIONS

1.
Serena: Yeah, Bette Davis. I love her eyes. Her hair is Harlow gold.

"Her hair is Harlow gold" is a line from the song Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes. The song spent nine weeks at number one on the Billboard charts in 1981.

2.
Gossip Girl: Poor Miss Iowa, it looks like she got caught playing Mrs. Robinson.

Mrs. Robinson is one of the main characters in the 1967 movie The Graduate. The movie starred Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft and was about a college graduate who has an affair with an older woman and ends up falling in love with the woman's daughter.

THE STYLE

Blair Waldorf continues to delight us with her incredibly styled wardrobe on this episode of Gossip Girl. Per usual, she's wearing a headband from Jennifer Behr, which she mixed with a Nanette Lepore blouse and Diane von Furstenberg skirt.

Serena van der Woodsen looks like the Belle of the Ball in this still from the eighteenth episode of Gossip Girl. She's wearing a stunning, strapless gown from Marchesa.

In this scene from the eighteenth episode of Gossip Girl, Vanessa Abrams looks beautiful in her multi-colored dress and oversized statement necklace. The dress is from Lauren Moffatt.
